Let’s face it, watches are no longer the essential time telling tool that they used to be. With the invention of cell phones, we no longer need to wear a wristwatch since the phone could be our timekeeper, alarm, stop watch, etc… However, just because watches aren’t essential for keeping track of time anymore, doesn’t mean that men should stop wearing them. In fact, it’s quite the opposite as I’m going to list five reasons why you should wear a watch.
1. Watches are great accessories for men
In today’s world, most people who are wearing watches are wearing them as an accessory – which is simply an item that can be added to something else in order to make it more useful, versatile, or attractive. Sure, we have accessories such as scarves, gloves, ties, and pocket squares to name a few, but men, unlike women, don’t have a ton of different jewelry options that can be worn without coming off as feminine; however, this is where the watch comes into play.
A good-looking watch that matches your outfit can, and will, significantly enhance your appearance. The watch is a subtle, classic, and timeless male accessory and it will go with any outfit no matter what the occasion is or how dressed up or down you are. To wear a watch is a personal reflection of style and self-expression and can be used to show people that without having to say a word.
P.S. women tend to be more attracted to men who dress well and watches are a great conversation starter.
2. A watch is convenient and simple
If I had a dime for every time I heard someone say that they don’t need a watch because they have a cell phone, I’d would be…probably not rich, but you get the point. If you need to check the time, a watch is far more convenient to look at than digging in your pocket to pull out a phone. You also don’t run the risk of dropping the watch either, as it is attached to your wrist with a band
Taking a quick look at your watch is effortless and can be done in social environments without looking as rude as someone who is staring at their phone. For example, say you’re in a meeting with your boss, would you rather pull out your phone to check the time or take a subtle glance at your watch? I think we all know the answer to this.
Also, how many times have you taken out your phone to check the time, just to get stuck in a world of notifications, emails, social media posts, or any other distractions you can think of? With the simplicity of a watch, there is freedom from this. Beyond admiring the beauty of your watch, it just won’t not have the same level of distractions as a smartphone will. Which is a good thing.
3. A good watch is a sign of adulthood
When I graduated from high school, one of the gifts that I received was a wristwatch. It was a decent watch, although I don’t quite remember what brand it was, but regardless, that watch symbolized my transition from being a boy with little responsibility to a young adult no longer protected by the walls of my high school.
You see, I’m sure that watch cost someone a good amount of money and it was gifted to me because they felt I was ready to handle something of that nature and that I was enough of an adult to appreciate and take care of it. I was proud of that watch and wore it to any function I attended and although I no longer have it today, I still appreciated what it stood for.
As an adult, a good, well crafted, timeless watch will show people that you are responsible and you have a healthy respect for time. The purpose of checking your watch is just that, to check for time. Not to check the latest fantasy league score or social media post, but to check the time. Adults are responsible and wearing a watch can help with being responsible.
4. Wearing a watch shows that you appreciate craftsmanship
A watch is more than just a watch. It’s more than a little device that you attach to your wrist for time telling purposes or fashion purposes.
There is a lot of craftsmanship that goes into creating an expensive, high end timepiece and even a lower end timepiece. A watch is someone’s art that has been worked on for hours, in some cases. There are watches that have taken hundreds of hours to make and once this is realized, people tend to appreciate the timepiece that much more. Nothing against a phone manufacturer, but no matter what case or attachment you put on a cell phone, it just doesn’t feel the same.
In addition to how a watch looks, there’s the appreciation of what is going on inside of it to make it so precise. There is a lot of work involved with making the watch tick. Once you understand how that works, you will appreciate it even more.
Watches are incredibly reliable and will continue to tick long after your cell battery is drained. They were around long before electricity and can operate without the need for electricity. There are even more technologies when it comes to watches that will be covered in another post.
5. Wearing a watch is elegant and a sign of success
Wearing a classic, timeless watch is a sign of elegance and success. Take fictional secret agent and overall bad-ass, James Bond, for example. Agent 007 is rarely seen without a watch on his wrist. The watches are a part of his image. It helps create his look of elegance. A guy who is well put together and can handle any situation that comes his way. Bond wouldn’t quite be who he is without his signature look.
You don’t have to be James Bond however, to have a look of elegance and success. You just need to help complete your look with a watch! Take this scenario for example: You are out and about and a beautiful woman asks you for the time. Would you rather shuffle around your pocket looking for a phone or would you rather elegantly take a look at your wrist?
If a dose of reality is needed, successful people have been known to wear watches. From CEO’s to Presidents to the everyday man, successful people wear watches. Bottom line, you don’t have to be Bond or a super rich CEO to give off a look of success and elegance, you just need to look and feel your best when the time comes. A watch will help with that.
Sure, most men these days have smartphones, but that doesn’t mean that watches should no longer be important to men. Wearing a watch can benefit a man in ways that a phone will never be able to. It’s his way of showing his personal style, a sign of responsibility, his appreciation for detail, and who he is as a man. Men of all walks have worn watches for hundreds of years and will continue to do so for many, many more.
